Spray polyurethane foam (SPF), the high-density stuff, 1 is the only product (so far) that can perform all of the functions of the principal control layers of the “Perfect Wall.” 2 The functions are water control, air control, vapor control, and thermal control.
1 This Sound Control Guide recommends ways to construct walls and other assemblies using ?ber glass insulation to help provide quality noise control.
One method to significantly increase the insulation level of an existing home without sacrificing interior space is to install spray foam insulation on the exterior of the home. This measure involves installing 2x4 studs over the existing siding.
Install continuous rigid foam insulation or insulated siding to help reduce thermal bridging through wood- or metal-framed exterior walls. Install rigid foam over or in place of plywood, OSB, or other wall sheathing.
A: Stud frame walls and batt-type insulation have been used to finish basements since the 1950s because this combination used to be the only available option. The problem is how vulnerable the arrangement is to moisture and mold growth.

Foil faced foam board insulation is a great idea but is not a good choice for hot climates or cold climates as an exterior insulation product. We will start with hot climates. Hot climates already have a lot of heat and vinyl siding tends to expand and contract with temperature changes up to 1" if the siding is made of recycled vinyl material.
If you like the existing metal siding, and you plan to keep the existing siding for many years, then you don't need to create an air gap between the wall insulation and the oldest layer of siding. Since your wall lacks an exterior air barrier, the best insulation to choose in your case would be spray polyurethane foam.
Uninsulated stud bays are common in older homes, so workers who pull down the lath and plaster expect to see the back side of sheathing boards on the exterior side of the studs. But in some cases, there isn’t any sheathing: the workers find themselves staring at the back side of the siding (see Image #1 on the right).
This is where my grey-area begins, since all the information I’ve been able to find about exterior insulation combined with siding assume a stud wall + sheathing construction as the exterior wall. I’d like to use Rockwool (formerly Roxul) insulation as I’m against using foam.
Opportunities for upgrading. Using dense-pack insulation techniques, empty cavity and some partially insulated cavity frame walls can be insulated from the top and bottom or from the interior or exterior.
Lessons Learned. On our first homes in New Orleans, Make It Right used standard wooden stud exterior walls and advanced framing construction. We glued and nailed the exterior sheathing and used spray foam insulation in the interior wall cavity.

FOAMULAR? insulation is not a structural material. Fit insulation board joints tightly and tape with Owens Corning BILD-R-TAPE? construction tape. For shingle or vertical siding applications, attach horizontal wood nailing strips through the insulation to the studs, and nail the shingles or siding to strips.
