Capped Composite Decking Made in the USA, decks are like wood but stronger. Now with an industry leading 30 year Fade & Stain Warranty.
Whether to leave a gap between pressure treated wood deck boards depends on how dry the wood you’re using is. Leave Gap: If the pressure treated wood has been kiln dried after treatment (KDAT), leave a 1/8” gap (the thickness of an 8-penny nail) between the boards when attaching, since the wood will expand slightly over time.
The goal is to have about an 1/8-inch gap (the diameter of an 8d nail) between boards after the decking has dried to its equilibrium moisture content. If the decking is installed wet, as is often the case for pressure treated material, it is best to install the boards tight, letting gaps form as the wood dries.
Make sure to gap the butt joint at least 1/8". Line up the seams over double joists. To install composite decking with a hidden fastening system, start at the house by face-screwing the first board.
A: Trex Hideaway hidden fasteners are designed to attach to the inside of the custom groove on the edge of Trex- grooved deck boards. The fastener design securely attaches decking boards by holding the edge of the decking board.
Leave a 1/8" - 1/4" gap for composite decking to allow for thermal expansion. Wood picture frame decking can be notched flush with the post. Along the house wall.
One of the most critical steps for properly securing composite decking in place is to make sure you have at least a 1/8-inch gap between the decking boards. This space (approximately equal to the width of a 16-penny nail) is important for two reasons.
Choosing how much of a gap to put between your decking boards isn't a simple answer. We use Ipe as an example to show its annual movement. Like a stopped watch that is only right twice a day, those deck boards are going to expand and contract as the seasons change, and no matter what you do, the gap between the boards will only be consistent for a certain window of time.

With composite decking you have to create the gap right from the get go. When I’m installing composite decking in the summer, I use a siding nail to determine the gap size. In the winter I use my speed square as a spacer.
You must gap Trex decking, both end-to-end and width-to-width. Gapping is necessary for drainage and the slight thermal expansion and contraction of Trex decking boards. Gapping also allows for the shrinkage of the wood joist system.
